Enjoy a glass of creamy horchata de arroz, a traditional Mexican drink that combines rice, cinnamon, and vanilla for a refreshing treat. Perfect on hot days or paired with spicy meals, this delightful beverage is your new favorite summer companion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup long-grain white rice
  • 4 cups water (divided)
  • 1 cup whole milk (or dairy-free alternative)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1/2 cup sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Rinse the rice under cold water until clear to remove excess starch.
  2. In a bowl, soak the rinsed rice in 2 cups of water for at least 4 hours or overnight.

  4. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a large pitcher.
  5. Stir in the milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt until well combined.
  6. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour before serving over ice.
